"Welcome To The Home Of Triathlon" and "Welcome Home Triathletes"
The giant signs that greet athletes to the world’s most iconic long-distance race, the DATEV Challenge Roth. Held in the heart of Bavaria, this legendary event is renowned for its unmatched atmosphere, lightning fast course, and rich history dating back to 1984. Each year, athletes from around the globe take on the ultimate challenge: 3.8 km of swimming, 180 km of cycling, and a 42.2 km marathon through the triathlon district of Roth. From the mythical swim start where hot air balloons fill the sky to the sound of the starting canons and and cheering spectators who line the bridges and banks of the Main-Danube Canal, to the iconic crowds at Solarer Berg and the electrifying finish-line celebration in the triathlon stadium, the entire course becomes a living arena.
With smooth roads, world-class organisation by Alice, Felix, Kathrin, and the incredible Challenge Roth Team and over 7,500 passionate volunteers this event delivers an unforgettable experience where personal bests are achieved, emotions run high, and lifelong memories are made.
It’s hard to think of another event where a Race Director is so completely present—not just in the planning, but in every moment of race week and race day itself. Felix Walchshöfer doesn’t observe Challenge Roth from a distance; he lives it alongside every athlete. In the lead-up to the race, he can be found walking the expo, stopping to chat, take photos, offer directions, and personally thank those who have come from around the world to be part of something special.
That same hands-on energy carries through every corner of race week, from the Pasta Party and swim recce to the pro Q&As and the electric atmosphere of the town centre celebrations. But it’s on race day where Felix’s presence truly defines the spirit of Roth. He’s there at the swim start with a reassuring pat on the back, out on course offering encouragement from a motorbike on the bike course and later an e-scooter for the run, and waiting at the finish line to place a medal around deserving athlete’s necks. Long after the winners are crowned, he remains, celebrating, supporting, and ensuring that the final finisher receives the same moment as the first. It’s this rare combination of humility, pride, and genuine care that helps make Challenge Roth unlike anything else in triathlon.
I'm honoured that I was able to catch up with Felix to hear his personal thoughts on what makes Roth so special, how the race continues to set the standard for long-distance triathlon, and what the future holds for this iconic event.
What inspired the creation of Challenge Roth, and how has its core mission evolved since it first began?
Challenge Roth was born out of a passion for long-distance triathlon and the idea of creating something truly special for athletes. From the very beginning, the goal was to build an experience and a sort of triathlon festival, one that combines world-class performance with a unique atmosphere. While the event has grown massively since its early days, the core mission remains unchanged: delivering an unforgettable race where every athlete feels like a champion.
What do you believe sets Challenge Roth apart from other major triathlons around the world?
It’s the Home of Triathlon. Roth is known as one of the fastest courses in the world, but at the same time, it offers an emotional experience that’s hard to describe. The energy from the crowds, especially at places like Solar Hill or the finish line, is something athletes carry with them for life. And of course, our 7,500 volunteers make all the difference.
What has been the most memorable moment or edition of the race?
There are many, but world record performances combined with the emotional stories of age group athletes always stand out and makes me emotional. It’s this contrast, elite excellence and personal triumph, that makes Roth so special every single year.
How do you work with the local community in Roth and the surrounding areas to ensure the event is a positive experience for everyone involved?
The race is deeply rooted in the region. We work closely with local communities, clubs, and authorities throughout the entire year. Transparency, communication, and mutual respect are key. Many locals are not just spectators, they are part of the event, as volunteers, hosts, and supporters.
What steps do you take to ensure the highest standards of safety and fairness for all participants?
Safety is our top priority. We have detailed plans for every part of the course, from swim safety teams to medical support and traffic control. At the same time, we ensure fairness through strict rules, experienced referees, and continuous monitoring of the race.
How has the event grown in terms of participation and international reach over the years, and how do you manage that growth?
Roth has evolved into a truly international event, with athletes from over 100 nations. Despite this growth, we deliberately limit the number of participants to maintain quality and safety. Managing growth means staying true to our values while continuously improving our organization.
Are there any traditions or elements of the race that you feel are essential to preserving its unique character?
Absolutely. The swim start at the canal, Solar Hill, and the finish line in the stadium are iconic. But beyond that, it’s the spirit of the event – the closeness between athletes, volunteers, and spectators – that we protect at all costs.
What role does innovation play in the development of Challenge Roth, whether in terms of technology, sustainability, or event experience?
Innovation is important, but it has to serve the experience. We invest in technology to improve safety, communication, and athlete tracking. Sustainability is also a growing focus, from waste reduction to responsible resource management.
How do you approach selecting sponsors and partners to align with the values and spirit of the race?
We look for long-term partnerships with brands that share our values: authenticity, passion, and commitment to sport. It’s not just about visibility, it’s about building something meaningful together.
What is the biggest challenge you have faced as the Race Director and how did you overcome it?
Managing an event of this scale always comes with challenges, especially in uncertain times. The key is having a strong team, clear communication, and the ability to adapt quickly while staying focused on what matters most: the athletes and the experience.
Could you tell us about the process of recruiting and training the large team of fantastic volunteers who make the race possible?
Our volunteers are the heart of Roth. Many of them have been part of the event for years, even decades. Recruitment happens largely through local networks. Training focuses on preparation, but also on conveying the spirit of Roth, being welcoming, supportive, and passionate.
How do you support amateur athletes, and what efforts do you make to ensure the event remains accessible to participants of all abilities?
Roth has always been about age group athletes. We provide detailed race information, support services, and a fair race environment. The goal is to make every participant feel equally valued, regardless of their finish time.
What are your thoughts on the evolution of triathlon as a sport, and how do you see Challenge Roth fitting into its future development?
Triathlon continues to grow globally, becoming more diverse and accessible. Roth will remain a benchmark for long-distance racing, combining tradition with innovation and setting standards for athlete experience.
How do you balance honouring the history and traditions of the event with introducing new features or changes over time?
It’s about careful evolution. We respect what makes Roth special, while continuously looking for ways to improve. Any change must enhance the experience without losing the essence of the event.
Looking ahead, what are your biggest goals or aspirations for Challenge Roth in the next 5 to 10 years?
Our goal is to continue delivering the best long-distance triathlon experience in the world. That means improving sustainability, enhancing the athlete journey, and keeping the unique Roth spirit alive for future generations.
Final message for athletes preparing for Challenge Roth 2026:
Enjoy the journey. The race is just one day, but everything leading up to it is part of the experience. When you arrive in Roth, take in the atmosphere, trust your preparation, and celebrate every moment. This is your day and we do everything we can to make sure it’s unforgettable
